Speeches

I am very glad to be here this afternoon at the investiture ceremony of an outstanding Ghanaian, who has become the Chancellor of Ghana’s premier University, my alma mater, the University of Ghana, Legon. Offspring of one of the prominent figures of the United Gold Coast Convention, the first nationalist party, UGCC of blessed memory, the eminent jurist, the late R.S. Blay, she is one of the first female alumna of the University.

Last week, on 29th June, 2018, our nation suffered an unexpected, grievous loss – the sudden departure of the immediate past Vice President of the Republic, His Excellency Kwesi Bekoe Amissah Arthur, Vice President for four and a half years, under His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama.

“During my lifetime, I have dedicated myself to this struggle of the African people. I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve. But if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die.”

I am very delighted to welcome you back to Jubilee House, the seat of the Presidency of our nation. We first gathered here on 19th October, 2017, after I had received several petitions from individual citizens and diverse groups, seeking the creation of several new regions, a process which had obtained the support of the Council of State, expressed to me in its epoch-marking letter of 15th August, 2017.
